Libyan Militias Armed With Guns and Grenades Clash in Tripoli

on November 8, 2013

Some 12 people have been injured in clashes between rival militias in the Libyan capital of Tripoli. The fighting broke out on Thursday when a heavily-armed group entered the city to take revenge for the killing of one of its militants in a conflict two days earlier, Reuters reports.

Residents in several parts of the city set up makeshift roadblocks and barricades to stop more militiamen from entering the area. The Radisson Blu Al Mahary Hotel, which is popular with Westerners, was damaged by several rounds of gunfire.

Without its own functional security force, the Libyan government has struggled to contain former fighters and Islamist militants more than two years after Muammar Gaddafi was deposed.
